Tell us about your expansion plans in Hong Kong and why you chose to expand here.
We chose to launch in Hong Kong for several reasons:
- We know that Hong Kongers and naturally very generous and that’s demonstrated in the 2013 World Giving Index where Hong Kong ranked 17.
- We also know that Hong Kongers like to give back to their local community and that’s demonstrated by the large number of local Hong Kong charities that we have on our platform as well as the global brand charities.
- Hong Kong is also a global hub with a large number of ex-pats from different countries living here, who can easily use our global platform to donate in one of 8 currencies to their favourite causes or sponsor their friends or families no matter where they are in the world.
- We’ve had great success in the last 14 months since launching in Hong Kong partnering with some fabulous charities, causes, events and corporates partners. However, we are by no means complacent and we look to continue to grow in Hong Kong to assist charities and causes in giving back to their community.
What is the online charity landscape like in Hong Kong?
It is varied with Hong Kongers giving to a variety of charities across different sectors from large NGOs to local community charities.
We have also seen great successes from charities in Hong Kong that have been quick to adopt online and social giving. Currently globally 64% of all our donations are through mobiles or tablets or social platforms and we expect this to continue to increase. This is very much the case in Hong Kong where people are very tech savvy and there is a very high level of mobile, tablet and social usage.
Currently there are 51 charities that have registered on JustGiving and users can choose to raise fund for this event, e.g. Médecins Sans Frontières, Summerbridge Hong Kong, Feeding Hong Kong, Mother’s Choice and etc.
What do you foresee as some of the challenges?
There are always challenges when growing a company, but we like to look at every challenge as an opportunity. We relentlessly iterate our product, updating it and fine-tuning it in fortnightly releases to make sure that we are at the forefront of technology curve.
