UK And Hong Kong Announce Agreement Reinforcing Investment Collaboration

Hong Kong, 26 March 2018 | Invest Hong Kong (InvestHK) and the Department for International Trade of the United Kingdom (DIT) agreed to strengthen collaboration in promoting inward investments, on the closing day of the GREAT Festival of Innovation. The Memorandum of Understanding encourages the development of businesses with a technology focus, such as artificial intelligence, financial technology and biotechnology.

The UK was also named as the Official Partner Country for Business of Design Week 2019.

Business of Design Week is the flagship annual event of the Hong Kong Design Centre and the biggest event of its kind in Asia, connecting creative leaders across industry. Witnessed by Dr Liam Fox, UK Secretary of State for International Trade, and Mr Edward Yau, Hong Kong SAR Secretary for Commerce and Economic Development, the announcement mark’s the UK’s ongoing commitment to deepen creative collaboration with partners in Asia.

Highlights from Day 4 at the Festival

Throughout Day 4, educators and students from both the UK and Asia’s leading higher education institutions shared insights with audiences, who also met entrepreneurs and educational thought leaders from the region. Guests were presented with cutting-edge research and witnessed prototype technology breathing new life into traditional art forms.

Principle Education Partner De Montfort University, Leicester (DMU) presented a number of showcases throughout the day. Particularly relevant to Hong Kong, students from the architecture faculty revealed how ‘vertical farming’ can tackle future food security issues and use leguminous vegetables to eliminate city carbon emissions.

A panel discussion moderated by Dr Karin Munasinghe, Ph.D of Fresenius Medical Centre explored the application of video game technology to the rehabilitation of patients suffering with trauma with Bournemouth University’s Dr Xiaosong Yang and Professor Hongnian Lu and Ulster University’s Professor Cherie Armour and Professor Damien Coyle.

Bournemouth University’s Dr Xiaosong Yang, commented, “Through our research in the UK into the application of AI into digital health, we could revolutionise healthcare. Even if a doctor doesn’t have background experience in the field, the data can be so easily collected and AI can then be used to shortlist diagnosis for patients.”

The University of Surrey presented its Centre for Vision, Speech and Signal Processing (CVSSP); a pioneering machine for perception which over the past 30 years has produced ground-breaking technologies from facial recognition for security, to medical image analysis for cancer detection. Audiences saw the latest in motion capture, cinematic VR production and ground-breaking 3D light field video content that is set to revolutionise the film and gaming industries.

English playwright William Shakespeare was brought firmly into the 21st century today as alumni from Coventry University performed scenes from King Lear with students thousands of kilometres apart in Tampere, Finland using their award-winning Shakespeare Portal. The interactive window uses conference technology and was developed by theatre experts to enable actors in different locations to perform on the same stage.

The creator of the Shakespeare Portal, Dr Tom Gorman from Coventry University, said, “The technology of the Shakespeare Portal can be applied in many different ways for similar teaching, allowing people to collaborate and work together even though they may be distances apart. Our end goal is to make live theatre international and enhance collaboration with other countries.”

Professor Michael Rofe of Falmouth University also presented Falmouth’s Online Orchestra, an online portal that allows musicians to collaborate and perform together, enhancing musical facilities available to young musicians around the world.

Also on Day 4, Bournemouth University presented DigiTrace, an innovative software and analytical tool package that allows footprints and tracks to be captured, visualised and analysed in 3D. The software has been applied in fields ranging from forensic criminal investigations to wildlife conservation strategy.

The Festival hosted the Jardines’ Innovation Challenge, a Dragons’ Den-style competition where students were invited to present their innovative ideas in front of industry experts for the chance to win a 6-week internship opportunity with Jardines. The judging panel included Joanne Chan, Business Navigation & Operations Manager at IKEA and James Mabbutt, Corporate Finance Analyst at Mandarin Oriental Hotel Group.

Ask An Entrepreneur was a session that gave students the opportunity to ask internationally celebrated entrepreneurs about their successes and failures that have fueled their growth. Dupsy Abiola, Head of Global Innovation, IAG, offered invaluable insight to their audience on the mindset on the entrepreneur and the importance of disruption in business.

While the GREAT Festival of Innovation has formally closed, powerful partnerships formed over the four days have led to strengthened collaboration and significant deals signed between UK and Asian businesses and investors, which will be announced next week.
