CEM Banks on Software AG to Revolutionise Macau’s Electrical Grid
Hong Kong – October 22, 2018 –Software AG (Frankfurt TecDAX: SOW), a leading enterprise software company, announced that it has been providing Companhia de Electricidade de Macau (CEM), Macau’s sole electric utility, with the strengthened capability to sustain power transmission and distribution in the emerging Internet of Things (IoT) era.
The Asia Pacific utilities sector is undergoing a major revamp as the market recognizes the potential of smart meters in enhancing outage management and reducing costs. In light of this, CEM has been focusing on developing a state-of-the-art advanced metering interface, or a smart grid, which delivers significant cost savings and enhanced services through better customer supply and demand data.
Bent on adopting new forms of electronic payment and developing a new network of charging stations for electronic vehicles, CEM has recognized the need for stronger capabilities that ensure its front-end systems are integrated with a back-end core. CEM eventually invested in webMethods, Software AG’s powerful application integration suite, upon realizing that its future depended on a stable, secure, multi-channel integration platform.
webMethods combines all systems and data sources to deliver a comprehensive, trusted view of CEM’s business functions while integrating existing and new technologies into the IoT. As the organization worked closely with Software AG’s sales teams and Global Consulting Services during the recent six-month pilot period, CEM was able to implement all use cases of the webMethods platform ahead of schedule and within budget. Following its successful pilot run, the platform has since been at the core of CEM’s new business initiatives, including its Advanced Metering System and Electronic Vehicles. Leveraging webMethods has since allowed CEM to experience faster time-to-market for projects, with shorter integration development lifecycles.
“We are banking on Software AG’s track record in the Asia Pacific utilities sector to drive agility and innovation as we advance our electricity generation and distribution capabilities further. We are definitely excited to dive head-on into an IoT-enabled future with Software AG as our partner,” said Denis Chan, IT Senior Manager, CEM.
CEM’s advanced metering pilot initiative is geared towards bringing intelligent metering devices to 2,000 Macau homes and businesses - with the eventual goal of reaching more than 200,000 customers. Unlike the analog meters of the past, CEM’s Advanced Metering System provides detailed real-time information on power demand and supply, grid disruptions, and other essential metrics. This has since translated to better service delivery, significantly reduced costs and greater efficiencies in Macau’s power grid.
“The utility sector in Asia is undergoing a major overhaul, as technology and digitalization create new value through intelligent metering capabilities,” said Anneliese Schulz, Vice President of Software AG Asia. “We hope to further empower CEM as they focus on further expanding Macau’s network of electronic vehicles and charging stations.”
CEM will continue to leverage Software AG’s solutions as it rolls out new digital customer service offerings and more digitally-enabled features, including additional payment platforms and mobile solutions designed to revolutionize the meter reading process.
