“Born to be the Boss” Startup Event Aiming To Boost Enterprise In Hong Kong
Inaugural Conference To Inspire, Connect And Support Aspiring Entrepreneurs And Startups
HONG KONG, 27th November 2018 -Aspiring entrepreneurs, business founders and members of the SME community will come together this week for JEM’s “Born to be the Boss” Startup Conference, an initiative to boost enterprise support in Hong Kong.
Taking place at theDesk Leighton Centre on Thursday 29th November, the event which serves as a celebration of self-starters will give first-time business founders the opportunity to hear and speak with successful entrepreneurs that include Dhiraj Mukherjee, Co-founder of Shazam, Douglas Young, Co-founder of Goods of Desire (G.O.D.) and Derek Kwik, Managing Partner of Brave Soldier Venture Capital.
The programme will also feature a panel discussion with established local entrepreneurs who will discuss their struggles, plus the highs and lows of their own startup journeys.
Moderated by television and radio journalist Karen Koh, panelists include: Pilar Morais, Co-founder of CHI Residences; Lori Granito, Founder of Legendary Coaching, Boss Lady Millionaires, Kitchen Sync, Magnolia and Go Gourmet; Jonathan Glover, Founder of The Butchers Club; Thomas Hui, Co-founder and CEO of theDesk; and Bruno Lee, Founder of Project Curiosity.
According to the JEM Group’s CEO Janet Middlemiss, Hong Kong startups have a great deal of potential but further support is needed locally to help them progress beyond the small business stage. “Although the number of startups is on the rise, many are sole proprietors and small businesses who have expressed that they need more support.”
Statistics released by the Companies Registry show that the total number of local companies registered under the Companies Ordinance was 1,383,946 at the end of 2017, up 42,723 from the corresponding figure for 2016.
In 2017, a total of 160,229 local companies were also newly registered with the Registry illustrating that the entrepreneurial spirit within the territory continues to grow.
As a social enterprise, JEM through its “Born to be the Boss” entrepreneurial campaign provides information, insight, resources and connections to help budding entrepreneurs reach their business goals and grow their ventures. “Through initiatives such as our conference, JEM’s aim is to support aspiring entrepreneurs by giving them the guidance, confidence and inspiration to turn their business ideas into reality,” says Ms. Middlemiss.

In addition to the main conference session, the event will feature a networking cocktail reception sponsored by MyiCellar, a cellar management tool that allows wine enthusiasts to easily access information on different wines and tasting events, while tracking every bottle that they have purchased and tasted!
A proportion of the profits from “Born to be the Boss” will also be directed to aspiring entrepreneurs on Kiva, a non-profit crowd-funding platform which provides access to startup capital that assists budding business owners from developing regions of the world start and launch their own ventures.
