Artificial Intelligence startup Appier’s CEO Chih-Han Yu named Young Global Leader 2016 by World Economic Forum
[March 16, 2016 – Taipei] Today, artificial intelligence company Appier announced that World Economic Forum has named CEO and cofounder Chih-Han Yu one of their Young Global Leaders this year. Chih-Han is one of 121 government leaders, scientists, social activists, business leaders and artists under age 40 to make the list. “I’m honored and humbled to be included in this year’s class of Young Global Leaders among such notable industry names. From medicine to business strategy and advertising, technology and artificial intelligence have the potential to change the way we live and do business. At Appier, we hope to be part of this change — making the leap from AI theory to practice to help make complex decisions easy for businesses,” said Chih-Han Yu, CEO, Appier.
Appier was founded by a passionate team of computer scientists and engineers with experience in AI, data analysis, distributed systems and marketing. In November last year, Appier announced that it had closed US$23 million in Series B funding from UOB Venture Management Pte Ltd (UOBVM), Sequoia India, JAFCO Asia, TransLink Capital, and MediaTek Ventures. In total, Appier has raised US$30 million, including the initial US$6 million from Sequoia India in Series A funding.
The only Taiwanese on the list this year, Chih-Han is an early name in the field of artificial intelligence. He started his research career in the United States of America 15 years ago, and his work in the field includes AI-based cross-screen analytics, transformer robotics, and four-legged autonomous robots. While working on his doctoral degree in computer science from Harvard University, he also collaborated with the Wyss Institute for Biologically Inspired Engineering to develop self-adapting robotics systems to help polio patients walk correctly.
Other notable names on this year’s list include Joe Gebbia, co-founder of Airbnb, Sam Altman, head of Y Combinator and Ashton Kutcher, actor and emerging tech investor, who cofounded the innovation lab, Thorn. In past years, nominees have included Larry Page (CEO, Google) and Marissa Mayer (CEO, Yahoo). For more information, you can find the World Economic Forum’s full 2016 list here: http://wef.ch/ygl16.
