1. Tell us how Bedjet came about, what inspired it?

I have a long history with cooling/heating and personal comfort technology – this has included being an engineering on the NASA spacesuit program responsible for some of the cooling/heating climate comfort systems of the suit.

BedJet was a concept I had ten years ago and never did anything with until my elderly mother was stuck in bed for a few weeks on a surgery, completely immobile. It was winter and we did everything we could do to keep her comfortable – electric blankets, mattress pads, space heaters, etc. Everything was too warm, too cold or too many wires in the bed. That’s when I realized I have helped keep astronauts comfortable in space and this was just a bed! So I started working on the BedJet first prototype.

2. How did you design and manufacture Bedjet?

First few prototypes were designed and build on my kitchen table. I hired a team of engineers (consultants) to help finish the design and then brought it to an Asian OEM factory to turn into a real product.

3. Tell us about your Kickstarter campaign. Did anything surprise you with Kickstarter campaign? Any anecdotes to share in creating and running the Kickstarter campaign?

If it goes well, it’s like crack – watching the backers rack up and email you is so rewarding/addicting.

4. How did you create the video for your Kickstarter campaign?

Hired a professional video production company for a few thousand dollars.

5. Can you share tips for those considering crowdfunding their project?

  • Don’t quit your day job.
  • Don’t feel bad that other projects that seem suckier than yours are doing better – you aren’t racing against anybody else but yourself.
  • Finally – don’t assume your success on Kickstarter will be easily replicated in real retail settings until you actually get out there and prove it to yourself. Success on Kickstarter is with a very specific customer demographic that may be harder to access once you get out into the real “business” world of consumers.

6. What’s the most challenging part of creating/running a Kickstarter?

The time commitment while still having to run a business.

7. Did you consider or use other crowdfunding platforms? If so, how did they perform?

Indiegogo we looked at. We were close to going with them over Kickstarter, as they are more customer service oriented than Kickstarter. With Kickstarter, you really are on your own and they do arbitrary things without explanation to some creator’s projects (like suspend them). It’s like they don’t want to communicate with any creators. Indiegogo had more of a customer service mentality and made people available to talk to us. In the end we went with Kickstarter because our video was already created and we wanted to leverage backers from our first project, but I give Indiegogo higher marks for caring/communicating with me.

8. What’s next for Bedjet?

We just landed a deal with QVC so ya’ll will be seeing us come January on TV!!!
